FAQ

Smart Home Basics Asked

The questions we hear most from people setting up their first rooms, answered plainly.

Question and answer bubbles?
Do I need a hub?

For most first setups, no. A smart speaker or display that acts as a Matter controller and Thread border router covers it. Zigbee-only bulbs need a bridge, such as the Philips Hue Bridge, or a speaker with a Zigbee radio. See Hubs, Bridges and Protocols.

What is Matter and should I insist on it?

Matter is a shared smart home standard released in 2022 that lets devices work across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. When choosing between similar products, prefer the Matter version; it keeps your options open if you switch phones.

Can renters install smart devices?

Yes. Speakers, bulbs and plugs need no tools. Get written permission before replacing a thermostat or drilling for a doorbell, and keep the original parts to reinstall when you leave.

Will smart devices work if the internet goes down?

Matter devices can still be controlled on your local network, from the app or physical buttons. Voice assistants, remote access and cloud video recording need the internet.

Does a smart speaker listen all the time?

It listens locally for its wake word and sends audio to the company after detecting it. Use the mute button and auto-delete settings to limit recordings. Our data safety guide covers each platform.

Is a video doorbell legal if it sees the street?

Generally yes, but in the UK filming beyond your boundary brings data protection duties under UK GDPR. Use privacy zones, aim the camera at your own property and keep recordings briefly.

How many devices should I buy first?

Start with a speaker and two bulbs. Add a plug, then a thermostat and doorbell once the basics feel natural. Our room planner walks through the order.

Do smart bulbs work with regular wall switches?

They need power to stay smart, so leave the wall switch on. A smart switch or battery remote solves this for households that instinctively use switches.

Do smart plugs save energy?

They can cut standby use and show what devices draw, but the plug itself uses a little power. Real savings come from schedules and from changing habits once you see the numbers.
